Hiring a family solicitor in 2026: salaries, costs and what to look for
By Ben Holtom, founder of Sourcefully. Updated .
The short answer
Outside London, family solicitors earn around £34,000 to £57,000 at NQ, £45,000 to £76,000 at 4 to 5 PQE and £60,000 to £115,000 at senior level depending on region, and £51,000 to £73,000 at NQ in London. Family paralegals in regional firms earn £25,000 to £31,000. The biggest single driver of pay is the mix of legal aid and private work. A 20% agency fee on a £62,000 family solicitor is £12,400; a Sourcefully flat fee is £7,500 plus VAT.
Family has one of the widest pay ranges in law. Two solicitors at the same PQE in the same region can be more than £20,000 apart, mostly because of what their caseload is made of. Benchmark the work, not the title.
The figures below cover England and Wales.

Family support, regional firms
| Role | Typical range 2026 |
|---|---|
| Family paralegal | £25,000 to £31,000 |
| Family legal secretary | £27,000 to £30,500 |
Solicitor bands are from LawBoard salary benchmarking 2026, which models mid-size firm pay across England and Wales. Smaller high street firms often pay below these bands, and larger regional firms above.
Support and paralegal bands are typical ranges for regional firms outside London.
What moves pay: legal aid against private work first, then complexity (high net worth financial remedy with business valuations, pensions, trusts or international elements pays a premium), advocacy, and supervision of juniors.
What it costs to hire
Compared with a typical agency fee of 20% of first-year salary, Sourcefully's flat fees are set by salary band and paid when your hire starts. For roles from £45,000, £500 is due when the search starts and deducted from the fee. Fees are plus VAT.
| Role | Salary | Agency at 20% | Sourcefully flat fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family paralegal | £28,000 | £5,600 | £3,000 |
| Family solicitor, NQ | £46,000 | £9,200 | £5,000 |
| Family solicitor, 4 to 5 PQE | £62,000 | £12,400 | £7,500 |

What the family market is like
Demand for family lawyers is steady, and tightest at 3 to 7 PQE, where most teams want people who can run a caseload and handle hearings without close supervision. Many firms are hiring or expect to within the year, so good candidates usually have options.
Family work is emotionally heavy. Caseload, supervision and wellbeing support matter as much as salary to experienced family lawyers, and firms that are open about them retain people longer.
What to look for when you screen
- Their work mix: financial remedy, private law children, public law care, domestic abuse injunctions, cohabitation and nuptial agreements.
- The split between legal aid and private work, and whether they have worked under a Legal Aid Agency contract.
- Advocacy experience at directions hearings, FDRs and final hearings.
- Resolution membership, accreditation, or mediation and collaborative training.
- Their billing record and caseload size.
- How they manage distressed clients and protect themselves from burnout.
How to make your role stand out
- State the legal aid and private split honestly.
- Describe supervision and how caseloads are managed.
- Mention wellbeing support and flexibility. They matter in this practice area.
- Show progression to senior associate or partner.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a family solicitor earn in 2026?
Outside London, around £34,000 to £57,000 at NQ, £45,000 to £76,000 at 4 to 5 PQE and £60,000 to £115,000 at 8 to 15 PQE depending on region. London pays £51,000 to £73,000 at NQ. Legal aid-heavy roles sit towards the lower end and complex private financial work towards the top.
Why do family solicitor salaries vary so much?
Mostly because of the legal aid and private work mix. Legal aid rates limit what a firm can pay, while complex private financial remedy work bills at much higher rates. Firm size and region move pay too.
How much does it cost to recruit a family solicitor?
A typical agency fee of 20% on a £62,000 family solicitor is £12,400. Sourcefully charges a flat £7,500 plus VAT at that salary: £500 when the search starts, deducted from the fee, and the rest when your hire starts.
We hold a legal aid contract. What should we check?
Check that your supervision requirements under the Legal Aid Agency contract are still met after the hire, particularly if you are replacing a supervisor. It is worth confirming the candidate's supervisor status early in the process.
